Made from 100% Vermentino from Castiglion della Pescaia (along the Tuscan coast). The grapes were harvested in the early hours of morning, to ensure maximum extraction and aromatic complexity. Following fermentation, the wine was matured in stainless steel vats until bottling, in March. The winemaking techniques utilized helped to exalt the typical aromas and structure of the Vermentino varietal. Casamatta Bianco has a pronounced personality; a light color with golden reflections, a very intense, fruity nose with floral and herbaceous notes. It is full-bodied in the mouth, harmonious, very persistent and with an enjoyable finish.

Varietal: Vermentino

Vermentino grapes are thought to have originated in Spain, and this white wine varietal is still grown in small quantities on Spanish land. However, it quickly moved eastwards to Italy, and found a new home in the warm and sunny Mediterranean climate there, where it became highly popular due to its hardiness and resistance to rot. Today, it is most closely associated with the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, where it is widely grown and used for producing both fine white wines and table wines, prized for their freshness and acidity. Vermentino wines tend to be rather light in body and low in alcohol, which allows their crispness and acidic nature to come forward, and their flavors of lime and green apple to shine.

All over the stunning region of Tuscany in central Italy, you'll see rolling hills covered in green, healthy grapevines. This region is currently Italy's third largest producer of wines, but interestingly wineries here are generally happy with lower yields holding higher quality grapes, believing that they have a responsibility to uphold the excellent reputation of Tuscany, rather than let it slip into 'quantity over quality' wine-making as it did in the mid twentieth century. The region has a difficult soil type to work with, but the excellent climate and generations of expertise more than make up for this problem. Most commonly, Tuscan vintners grow Sangiovese and Vernaccia varietal grapes, although more and more varietals are being planted nowadays in order to produce other high quality wine styles.

Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
