Lots of ripe black fruits (blackberries, black cherries) emerge from the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Hauts De Barville, another complex, medium to full-bodied, wonderfully textured 2020. A solid effort by the Brotte team, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hauts de Barville is 76% Grenache, with the balance split between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Scents of cherries, suede and dusty earth mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is a bit taut, but nicely so, with an attractive push-pull between ripeness and acidity, plus silky tannins on the long, expressive finish.

Checking in at 15% alcohol, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts de Barville is a shimmering pale ruby. It mixes bright aromas of red and black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, cloves and wood smoke. Full-bodied, concentrated and wrapped in ripe tannins, refreshing acidity balances it before closing with a pleasant finish.

Exuberant and expressive, this offers cherry coulis, raspberry, red licorice and warm earth notes that are juicy and open-knit, yet propped up with snappy acidity, a refreshing surge of fine mineral and a note of tar. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2030. 10,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported.

Rated 91 by James Suckling
A classic, grenache-dominated Chateauneuf with a wide spectrum of red fruit, as well as notes of spices and violets. Rich, but with plenty of moderately dry tannin to balance the fleshiness, this has a long finish, where the sweetness and savory character are neatly matched. Drink or hold.
Winery
Ripe mulberry and strawberry notes abound from nose to finish, accented by hints of sweet spice and dried Mediterranean herbs. While rich and plush in body, it has brisk, integrated acidity and finely edged tannins that lend elegant structure.

Region: Rhone Valley

There are few wine regions in the world with a history as long and illustrious as that of the Rhone Valley in France. For over two thousand years, wines have been produced in this region, benefited by the excellent, mineral-rich soils of the region, and the varied climate which allows a wide range of grape varietals to grow. The Rhone Valley is now split into two quite separate regions, with the north part being characterized by its cooler, continental climate and the limited number of grape varietals grown, and the southern sub-region being perfect for growing a wide range of grapes, and producing an exciting number of different wine styles. The Rhone Valley is associated with elegant, flavorful wines, and certain grape varietals such as Viognier and Syrah, which are adept at expressing the finer features of their terroir.

This reputation for excellence is taken extremely serious by the French, with dozens of regularly updated laws and regulations ensuring the quality and accurate labeling of wines.
