As with the rest of the wines, I tasted the first two vintages bottled, including the 2018 Fuente de los Huertos Garnacha from a cold and wet year, very different than 2017. The fermentation and élevage were similar: a long maceration with full clusters and one year in used 500-liter oak barrels that are quite neutral and don't lend oak aromas or flavors. This is a little shy and has deeper color than the 2017 (a constant here and in the San Martín zone: the wines have less color in warm years and deeper ones in cooler years) along with great energy, balance, detail and texture. It's very young but still approachable, with no noticeable oak (like all the reds here), great purity and definition. The floral aromas come with some time in the glass. This is beautiful, a Garnacha of great finesse. 2,500 bottles were filled in January 2020. ... More details

Varietal: Grenache

The Grenache grape varietal has its origins in the dry and arid regions of central Spain, where it continues to thrive to this day under the blazing sun of this region. However, its popularity and versatility has meant that these purple skinned grapes have spread all over the Old and New World and have become of the most widely planted grape varietals on earth. The tightly bunched, round fruit of the Grenache vine can be rigorous and prodigious in the correct conditions, but is often struggling against various types of rot and mildew. Thanks to modern techniques for avoiding such problems, Grenache grape farmers now enjoy strong and high quality yields which they can use to produce the distinctive light bodied and spicy wines associated with this grape.

Country: Spain

Ever since the Phoenicians and Romans brought their knowledge of vine cultivation to Spanish soils, the country's culture has grown alongside wine production, with wine being a vital part of Spanish identity and Spanish traditions. Each region of Spain has a wine quite distinct from the others, and it is produced by smallholders and families as much as it is by large companies and established wineries. From the relatively mild and lush regions of La Rioja to the arid plateaus that surround Madrid, grapes are grown in abundance for the now booming Spanish wine industry, and new laws and regulations have recently been put in place to keep the country's standards high. By combining traditional practices with modern technology, Spanish wineries are continuing to produce distinctive wines of great character, flavor and aroma, with the focus shifting in recent decades to quality over quantity.
