Released only in magnum and a blend of the single vineyards (Christophe continues to keep the vineyards that compose the blend a secret), the 2019 Syrah Wallah Wallah Special #13 offers a textbook Rocks bouquet of meaty red and blue fruits, iron, baking spices, dried herbs, and pepper. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, plush, seamless beauty that has remarkable balance, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It drinks brilliantly already with a decant, yet I have no doubt it will still being singing at age 20. ... More details

A lovely nose of ground and whole spice, ripe strawberry, red cherry and tarragon. Medium-to full-bodied with slightly firm tannins and driving acidity. So much lovely peppery character here. A bit of mineral nuance, too, adding some earthiness and articulation to the ripe-fruit profile. Hints of spice. Totally delicious. Only in magnum. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2024.

Only bottled in magnum, the 2019 Wallah Wallah Syrah Special is in its 13th vintage and boasts classic Syrah tones with savory and spicy red fruit essences. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is playful with elegant flavors of peppercorn, red and purple flowers and hints of herbs to Provence before juicy and ripe raspberry and black plum notes appear in the mouth. Displaying a balanced structure with succulent acidity and fine-grained tannins, the Syrah delivers a fantastic food-friendly drinking experience that will go the distance.

The 2019 Syrah #13 Wallah Wallah Special, bottled only in magnum, is a blend of Cayuse Syrah vineyards. It bursts from the glass with a bouquet of crushed rocks and dried herbs giving way to mineral-drenched cherries. This is silky yet racy in style, with vivid red-toned fruits complicated by peppery spice and hints of sour citrus that create a wine of contrasts. It finishes dramatically long yet full of energy, as residual acids keep the mouth watering, while hints of white pepper slowly fade. As lovable as this is already, the #13 Wallah Wallah Special has the balance to mature beautifully over the next decade or more.

The aromas of this wine, only made in magnum, are perfumed and unmistakably of this producer, with notes of peat, potpourri, firepit, olive brine, graphite and orange rind, showing pleasing complexities. The palate is flavorful and intense, with savory notes that carry on the long finish.

Handsomely structured and refined, with compelling black raspberry, black olive and bacon fat flavors that build richness toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030. 481 cases made.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

Region: Washington State

The popularity of fine red wines, made with classic Old World grape varietals, has continued to increase in the United States over the past few decades. Washington state has consistently impressed with their red wine grape varietals, and many of the most popular American red wines of the past twenty years have come from this unique and interesting state with its two distinct regions. The vast majority of Washington's wines come from the arid eastern half of the state, a semi-desert irrigated by the rivers which run through the area, with considerably fewer wineries found in the wetter western side. Washington is renowned for the production of strong, fruit-forward wines made with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and other varietals, with many fine white wines being produced there also.

Country: United States

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

Appellation: Walla Walla

The beautiful wine region of Columbia Valley in Washington State is one of the true gems of the United States' wine industry, full of innovative wineries and dedicated vintners, keen to prove that their terroir is as good as any found elsewhere in the world. Within Columbia Valley, we find the beautiful sub-region of Walla Walla, typified by its gently sloping hills and dry, arid soil. The sub-region of Walla Walla has been building up a powerful reputation for excellence over the past few decades, and many successful vintages in the late 90's prompted the opening of several new wineries within the area, boosting the local industry and increasing competition. The key grape varietals of Walla Walla are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which love the hot climatic conditions and dry, arid soils of the region, and produce magnificently complex and flavorful wines.
