92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2019 Naoussa, i.e., the Estate Xinomavro with just Domaine Karydas on the label, was aged for 24 months in French oak (40% new, 60% used) and sourced from 35 year old vines. Seeming rather full bodied on opening, with all that Xinomavro acidity and power, this is mouth coating and mouth filling, with classic, Xinomavro flavors and underlying minerality. As it airs, the structure takes over and it seems far less fruity and fleshy. This wine is nowhere near ready to drink, but it actually begins to drink shockingly well the next day, far more expressive then and showing off its fruit, not merely its power. It has the concentration to balance its power. Its flavor profile is classic and there is a lot going on here that is very impressive, which makes it a screaming value for the money. It will be astringent and a bit on the rustic side for awhile, though. Some cellaring will help. When you crack it, remember that it is a food wine, not a simple sipper

green grapes

Varietal: Xinomavro

Xinomavro is the predominant grape varietal of Macedonia, although it is also grown in many parts of Greece where the climatic conditions are suitable for this particular fruit. The names translates as 'acid black', which gives some clue as to the nature of this varietal. The grapes are renowned for their high tannin content, which is a result of the thick and blue-black skins found on the fruit. This particular characteristic results in a superb aging potential in wines made from the Xinomavro varietal, as time spent in barrels softens these strong, astringent tannins and allows the full range of their flavors to come through in the wine. Most commonly, Xinomavro grapes are associated with aromas of red gooseberry, spices, olives and dried fruit, such as dried tomato.

Country: Greece

Thanks to thousands of years of viticulture, and a dedication to quality and experimentation, Greek wines remain in a league of their own and continue to surprise and delight wine lovers around the world. From the refined and delicious Agiorghitiko wines, with their deep ruby red color and intense fruit flavors, to the unusual and highly aromatic fortified wines made with the black Mavrodaphne grapes, Greek wine is renowned for its variety and consistent excellence. It seems the blazing Mediterranean sunshine allows wineries to make the most of the late harvests and all the intensity of flavor this brings, resulting in wines which are bursting with fruit-forward character and unusual aromas.
