Donatsch's 2019 Pinot Noir Passion is deep, pure, fresh and tangy on the dark and toasty, very characterful but elegant and cherry-charming nose that indicates perfect ripeness and coolish precision of coolish ripened fruit (forest berries from red to black) along with delicate pepper notes. Full-bodied, round and intense on the palate, this is a dense, silky-textured, finessed and elegant, quite substantial but most of all refreshing and highly stimulating Graubünden Pinot with concentrated, densely textured fruit structured by fine but firm tannins. The finish is intense, pure and clear and reveals good power, grip and tension. This is an impressive and very sustainable Pinot Noir with excellent aging potential, though it also drinks perfectly well today, if decanted for a day or two. Honestly, the 2019 is my favorite Passion Pinot out of the six I tasted for this report (2008, 2009, 2010, 2018, 2019 and 2020) since it transports the coolish terroir of the Bündner Herrschaft as well as the vintage perfectly well. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted in January 2022. ... More details

You could easily mistake this elegant and self-confidently dry Swiss pinot noir for a young wine from a cooler corner of Burgundy, such as Savigny-Les-Beaune. I love the bright red-berry and cherry fruit up front and the subtle, earthy nuances at the long, precise finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.
Winery
Dense Pinot red, spicy, smoky note, concentrated fruit, full, concentrated palate, noble wood note, very dense Pinot with a long-lasting finish and great aging potential. Food Pairing: Food accompaniment to braised or roasted meat or game, cheese, and various main courses.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.
