92-94 Scents of pencil shavings join heady cassis notes on the nose of Guigal's 2019 Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph, sourced from the former estates of Grippat and de Vallouit. Aged half in new oak and half in second-fill barrels, it's full-bodied, rich and ripe, with a velvety mouthfeel and a lingering finish.

Saturated violet color. Smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue fruit, licorice and potpourri aromas show fine definition and spicy lift. Appealingly sweet and energetic on the palate, offering sweet blackberry, cassis, olive and exotic spice flavors underscored by juicy acidity. Shows very good depth as well as finesse and finishes extremely long and supple, with well-judged tannins that build steadily and add shape to the wine's lingering dark fruit.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.
