The pure Monastrell 2017 La Tremenda always represents great value and showcases the behavior of the grape in the Mediterranean climate and soil from Alicante. The grapes from 25-year-old vines fermented in small stainless steel vats, and the wine matured in French oak barrels for six months. There are notes of fresh fruit, rosemary and thyme, with clean aromas, open and expressive. The palate is juicy and round, and this is an entry-level red that represents the higher volume in the winery. This wine reflects the changes over the last seven or eight years: they do three tries of the harvest, and the first bunches tend to go to this wine. The well-seasoned barrels also go to this wine, and the vinification is much softer. The result is fruit-driven, with just a spicy twist. 2017 seems a lot cooler in the Mediterranean part of Spain than in most of the inland regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero and so on. This is a bargain Monastrell. ... More details

Varietal: Mourvedre

In many parts of the world, from Washington State to France, Australia to Spain, wineries have been working with the Mourvèdre varietal grape to achieve fantastic and fascinating results. The grape varietal is actually a relatively ancient one, believed to have been brought to Spain from Asia Minor over two thousand years ago. The Mourvèdre grape is generally considered to be a difficult one to cultivate, as it requires both heat, light and moisture, meaning wineries wishing to grow Mourvèdre need to be well irrigated, but in hot regions where the vines will be safe from rot. The grapes hold lots of unusual and interesting flavors, ranging from meaty and gamey, to brambly and full of dark fruit notes. As such, the wines they produce can be matched with lots of different foods, making them popular around the world.

Country: Spain

From the deep and intense Rioja wines, or the dry and refreshing Ruedas, from Tempranillos to Verdejos, the range and quality of Spanish wines is always going to impress and fascinate. With several thousand years of traditions and expertise leading the way, Spanish wineries are currently producing some of the most flavorful and interesting wines to come out of Europe, striving to overcome the reputation problems the country suffered in the mid to late twentieth century. Despite being one of the largest producers of wine in the world, with billions of bottles being filled each year, Spanish wine producers are more interested in quality over quantity than ever before. The results of this are some truly world class wines rivaling even the finest produce of France in regards to balance, character and flavor, gaining new fans and enthusiasts every day.
