Glass-staining ruby. Deeply perfumed dark berry, floral, smoky mineral and olive scents show excellent clarity and a hint of candied licorice. Sweet, palate-staining blackberry, cherry preserve and floral pastille flavors put on weight with air and take on a spicy quality on the back half. Rich but lively as well, delivering firm tension on an impressively persistent, mineral-tinged finish that features fine tannins and a sexy floral note. ... More details

Smoky tobacco and charred vanilla notes accent pure, lip smacking notes of cassis and blueberry pastilles here. A full bodied, supple expression of Côte-Rôtie vinified fully destemmed and matured in 100% new French oak, it's an extravagant, toffee-kissed sip accentuated by fine, pillowy tannins. Approachable young but likely to improve through 2030 and hold futher still.

Very impressive with a slightly dialed-back oak influence (back to 60% from 100% new demi-muid), this has a beautifully rich nose with dark-cherry and chocolate aromas in a fresh, attractive mode. The palate has a reasonably dense feel to the tannins. A very sleek and fine, juicy and long feel here. So fleshy with so much blackberry and black cherry fruit. Best from 2025.

The 2017 Cote Rotie la Viailliere had just been blended and was in tank awaiting bottling at the time of my visit. Like all of the 2017s here, it shows more concentration and fruit density than the 2016, boasting scents of violets, black olives and espresso, a concentrated, medium to full-bodied palate and a long, velvety, blackberry-stained finish.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
