Color: Bright and brilliant straw yellow with light coppery hues. Nose: Complex, subtle and enfolding. Generous and floral, with notes of acacia flowers, jasmine, hawthorn, broom and elderflower, followed by hints of white and yellow fruits like pears, peaches, Golden Delicious apples and apricot, blended with a fresh minerality and a pleasant citrus note. Sweet sensations of lemon cream and crème brûlée are supported by a spicy freshness. Palate: Full-bodied, crisp, rounded. A fresh, enfolding, mineral and savoury entry. Complex mouthfeel with rich notes of white peaches, lychees, apples and winter melon, complemented by sweet hints of tea biscuits. Fresh, tangy and harmonious. The very long, lingering finish offers a fruity, salty aftertaste. Food pairings: Particularly suitable for fish dishes, shellfish hors d’oeuvres, risottos and vegetable flans.

Varietal: Pinot Gris

One of the most versatile and interesting white wine grape varietals widely grown around the world is surely the Pinot Grigio. This grape comes in many different shades and colors, and unsurprisingly, it can also provide a remarkable range of flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is a varietal quite strongly influenced by both the terroir it is grown in, as well as by the expertise and intentions of the winery which is processing it. As such, many Pinot Grigio wines are relatively sweet, due to their high level of natural sugar. However, they can also be very dry for the same reasons, and in many countries they are aged and mellowed, resulting in beautiful tawny amber tones and a very rounded, full bodied character quite unlike white wines made from any other grape varietal.

Region: Friuli-Venezia Giulia

The special region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northern Italy has a long history of producing exceptional white wines in its beautifully mountainous vineyards. Situated between the stunning Italian Alps and the wild Adriatic sea, Friuli-Venezia Giulia's wineries are dedicated to capturing the alpine essence of their wonderful terroir, and the finest wines of the region are famed for their alpine freshness, full of notes of clear mountain waters and lush, green grasses. Because Friuli-Venezia Giulia is so close to the Italian border with Slovenia and Austria, it is normal to find wineries working with grape varietals not normally associated with Italian wines. However, the Riesling wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia are undoubtedly amongst the finest in Europe, and French varietals such as Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir also grow very well there alongside some of Italy's best Pinot Grigio vines.

This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
