Deep, dark chocolate and cedar to the black fruits here. The acidity is correct, and there's a fresh mineral seam that brings textural relief. Very full-bodied, powerful and intense in tannin. Pretty monumental with fairly high alcohol and the finish is just a little drying. Organically grown on limestone marl and Miocene sand soils. Whole clusters fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts. Aged 70% in barrel, 20% new, the rest in recently used barrels (one to four wines), the rest in concrete. ... More details

Saint Cosme's 2018 Gigondas is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 14% Syrah and 1% Cinsault, aged in a combination of new and used oak, with 30% of the volume matured in concrete. Full-bodied and generous, it's round and supple, with no hard edges to hamper the easy flow of asphalt, red raspberries and black cherries across the palate. Boasting ample but not excessive concentration, it's a lovely, seductive example of Gigondas to enjoy over the next decade or so.

Peppery notes of scorched bramble and dried sage perfume ripe, rich flavors of preserved plum and black fig in this weighty blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault matured in 20% new oak. It's an unctuously textured wine marked by strikes of char, vanilla and smoke but finishes fresh and delightfully salty. Delicious young, the wine should improve through 2028 and hold further still. Moving to the wines from bottle, the base Gigondas from this estate is a perennial winner and readers can safely buy bottles of this in just about every vintage. Giving up a Provençal bouquet of red and black currants, peppery herbs, leather, and loamy soil, the 2018 is medium to full-bodied, has a forward, sexy style, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s terrific today yet still has enough tannins to evolve for 10-15 years if you’re so inclined.

Brilliant ruby-red. The perfumed nose presents cherry, black raspberry, candied flowers and baking spice aromas, along with subtle earth and vanilla nuances. Smooth and expansive on the palate, offering gently sweet red and blue fruit flavors complemented by woodsmoke and cola nuances. The floral and cherry notes drive a long, gently tannic, spice-tinged finish. Raised in a combination of new and used oak barrels and concrete tanks.

This is a restrained, slightly old school style, with hints of garrigue and sage out front and a core of lightly dried red cherry and dark plum fruit picking up light brick dust and incense accents. Long, mineral-edged finish leaves a nice echo. Best from 2021 through 2031. 4,400 cases made, 930 cases imported.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
