This is a great vintage for this wine with a very fresh, attractive delivery in a full-bodied style. Ripe red plums, blackberries and cherries with a cedary, tobacco edge, purple olives and fruit-steeped roasting herbs. It has a very intense, crisply cut palate that has flavors of dark cherries, blackberries, chocolate and such attractive spice complexity. Runs long on the focused finish. Regal. A great Caley. A blend of 74% Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon and 26% Barossa shiraz. Try from 2023. ... More details

This fourth release of Yalumba’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz is opening up beautifully. Complexing seaweed notes mingle with cedar and dried herbs. Polishing the blackcurrant, berry and plum flavours to a fine sheen, the oak remains firmly in service of the fruit and, with powdery tannins, the delivery is seamless. Inky florals and perfumed cedar linger on the long, elegantly tapered finish, with its fine but firm chassis of tannins. Great finesse.

The latest vintage of Yalumba's super cuvée—the 2015 The Caley Cabernet & Shiraz—is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra and 26% Shiraz from Barossa (mostly from a Nuriootpa vineyard planted in 1901). Aged in almost 50% new French oak (all Yalumba-coopered), it offers up scents of mint, cassis, cola and plum. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and streamlined, very much Cabernet in style. It's richly tannic and clearly needs time, possessing a long, dusty finish that features raspberry, cherry and herbal flourishes alongside subtle hints of cedar and vanilla.

Generous, firm, concentrated and savory, this red offers mineral accents, and touches of dried rosemary, tapenade and fresh loam that mingle with spiced plum, black cherry and gingerbread flavors. Tannins are firm and toothsome, adding a wonderful backbone. The finish is epic, with wave after wave of details, bringing black tea, licorice and tobacco notes in to linger. Cabernet and Shiraz.
Winery
Deep, dense red in colour. Distinct Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon aromas: fresh, cool and refined green olive, leafiness, iodine and intriguing, fine and complex aromatics. Richness and precision, revealing refinement of Shiraz with red currant and spice. Perfectly balanced acid and tannin line sweeping through to the long finish.

Region: Limestone Coast

In south-eastern Australia, close to the border of Victoria, we find the Limestone Coast – one of Australia's best known and most highly regarded wine regions which produces up to a third of the country's wines each year. Limestone Coast is notably for many reasons; the cool, maritime climate which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and fully makes it a favorite for vintners and wine lovers alike, and the high quality soil rich in minerals often results in characterful wines with plenty of terroir expression. Interestingly, unlike other Australian wine regions, the Limestone Coast has a very healthy water table, meaning that irrigation is no issue in the region, and the vines remain healthy even through the dry ripening season. Plenty of different varietals flourish there, and red wine grapes grow to full ripeness in the warmer areas of the coastline, whilst fine white varietals such as Viognier grow very well indeed in the cooler parts.

Country: Australia

Despite much of Australia being covered by dry, arid deserts and bushland, the southern regions of the country and islands such as Tasmania have proved to be ideal for vineyard cultivation and wine production. The fertile soils and brisk oceanic breezes, coupled with the blazing Australian sunshine allow the grapes to grow to full ripeness before a late harvest, resulting in hugely flavorful wines which appeal to a wide international audience. Combine this with the experimental and daring approach Australian wineries have in regards to wine production, and it becomes clear why Australia has relatively quickly become something of a world leader when it come to exporting their produce to Europe and America. The Shiraz and Chardonnay grape varietals have produced the most successful and broadly appreciated results over the decades, however, in more recent years wineries have begun experimenting with a much wider range of grape varietals, demonstrating how Australian wineries are continuing to adapt and develop alongside international palates.
