92-94 The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Crays 1er Cru comes from steep limestone soils well-drained on the Roc de Vergisson. The fruit here tends to ripen a little quicker than others as it retains heat during the night due to the strong soils. That energy and richness are deftly controlled on the nose: acacia honey, honeysuckle, apricot blossom and chalk dust scents billowing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and very nuanced, with a crisp bead of acidity, a little compact on the understated, brioche-tinged finish that suggests it will be slightly drinking earlier than the La Maréchaude. ... • Practicing organic. • 100% Chardonnay. • 60+ year old vines. • Located on the upper part of Les Crays. Sits on the bedrock of the Roche de Vergisson. • South facing with pure rock at the surface in parts of the site. • Arguably the most concentrated cru with equally compelling minerality and precision. • Indigenous yeast. • Aged 12 months in barrel (20% new), then 3 months in stainless steel.

Varietal: Chardonnay

There are few white wine grape varietals as famous or widely appreciated as the Chardonnay, and with good reason. This highly flexible and adaptable grape quickly became a favorite of wineries due to its fairly neutral character. This neutrality allows the wineries to really show off what they are capable of doing, by allowing features of their terroir or aging process to come forward in the bottle. As well as this, most high quality wineries which produce Chardonnay wines take great efforts to induce what is known as malolactic fermentation, which is the conversion of tart malic acids in the grapes to creamy, buttery lactic acids associated with fine Chardonnay. Whilst the popularity of Chardonnay wines has fluctuated quite a considerable amount over the past few decades, it seems the grape varietal allows enough experimentation and versatility for it always to make a successful comeback.

Region: Burgundy

The wines which come out of the Burgundy region of France are regularly hailed as amongst the finest in the world, with the area now being synonymous with quality red wines of exceptional flavor, character and aroma. However, Burgundy is no newcomer to the world of fine wines, with the earliest recordings of the quality of this region's produce dating back to the 6th century, and archaeological evidence suggesting that vineyards had been cultivated there for over two thousand years. Today, there are dozens of controlled appellations within Burgundy, each producing exceptional wines typical of the region. The whole area benefits greatly from hot summers and mild, long autumnal periods, which, when coupled with the generations of expertise of the wineries in Burgundy, consistently produces superb wines for the world's enjoyment.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
