The vineyard at Château Lascombes is, at 120ha, one of the largest in Margaux and, unusually for a Left Bank château, is planted 50% to Merlot. In 2017, the grand vin contained 40% Merlot, alongside 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Aged in barrel for 18-20 months. Georgie Hindle: A dark, seductive, intense nose. Super-confident winemaking on show – a full style, well structured with plenty of impact. Gorgeous graphite, dark chocolate, sweet liquorice and cinnamon give texture and spice. Vincenzo Arnese: Good aromas of figs, prunes and dry, dark cherry. Oak gives sweet, spicy, woody aromas. Palate is powerful, with good freshness, and intense tannins. A very warm finish. Classic. Andy Howard MW: This could only be a classed growth from Bordeaux. It’s intense yet restrained. Focused. Dark fruits, with a mineral graphite edge. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Lascombes leaps from the glass with black raspberries, mulberries and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of earth, herbs, meats and cedar. Medium-bodied, it has plenty of juicy fruit and is fresh and plush, finishing long with a mineral lift.

A ripe juicy wine, this is restrained for this estate. The tannins and ripe black fruits are balanced by the acidity and elegant backdrop. It will age well, likely to be ready from 2024.

Impressive ripeness for the vintage with plum and light dark-chocolate character. Ripe, creamy tannins that are polished and pretty to taste. Full-bodied, but not too much. Flavorful finish. A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Drink in 2022.

Deep purple-colored, the 2017 Chateau Lascombes offers up a rocking bouquet of blackcurrants, mocha, espresso roast, tobacco, and cedary spice. Beautifully concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and opulent even on the palate (which isn’t the case for many wines), it's beautifully balanced, has ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. This is a hedonistic yet beautifully balanced, stunning 2017 that will drink nicely for 20 years or more.

The 2017 Lascombes is dark, plush and sumptuous, as it so often is. A wine with no hard edges and tons of immediacy, Lascombes will be hard to resist pretty much upon release. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, menthol, licorice and lavender infuse the 2017 with striking depth as well as character. Readers should expect a racy, unapologetically flamboyant style.

This features lots of perfume, with lilac, sandalwood, savory and bergamot notes working together, backed by a silky core of cassis and black cherry fruit. The elegant finish shows sneaky length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032. 15,833 cases made.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux method of blending quality grape varietals is something which has long been imitated and envied around the world. Whilst there are six Bordeaux grape varietals allowed for the production of red wine in this region of France – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere – the most common and widely used combination involves a careful blend of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, usually with a small percentage of Petit Verdot to boost the overall flavor and balance things out. This process accentuates the finer points of all these varietals, and takes the astringency of one type whilst rounding it out and mellowing it with the light tannins and fleshiness of another. The results are rarely short of spectacular, and are perfect for oak aging, where the flavorful magic of Bordeaux wine making can really take place, and the complex aromas and characteristics can truly come forward.
