The 2021 Ried Loiserberg 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner shows prominent lactic notes, and in the background, orange aromas appear. The palate seems quite quaffable at first, but then it turns out to be powerful and distinctive, even a bit phenolic, but without being bitter. Overall, it's a juicy, quite complex and persistent Veltliner from the loess-covered crystalline rocks of the rather cool Loiserberg. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in Grafenegg in September 2022.
Winery
Loiserberg, a terraced Erste Lage (Premiere Cru classified) vineyard with a southeast exposure, is their highest and coolest vineyard site, at 400m above sea-level. The vines here are over 30 years old, and the soils are composed of glimmer slate, with a little loess on top. The cold winds from the northwest chill down this hill as soon the sun goes down, so the fine fruit aromas in the berries are preserved. The combination of microclimate and soil creates a wine with a crystalline structure and pure fruit. The grapes are harvested according to taste, not by analysis; it is only a short time between not-yet-ripe and overripe maturity. If the grapes are too ripe, the minerality is lost. 100% spontaneous fermentation in 2000L barrels (local oak, old barrels); 6 months on full lees before bottling. All single vineyard wines are 100% botrytis free.

Varietal: Gruner Veltliner

The highly versatile Gruner Veltliner varietal grapes have been grown for many centuries in central and eastern European countries, and are still widely drunk and celebrated around Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Whilst they are not seen much elsewhere around the world, in recent years they have been cultivated in certain parts of the United States and in a few other New World countries. These pale skinned grapes grow most successfully in cooler climates, and are popular with wineries due to the fact that they are relatively hardy and resistant to disease. Gruner Veltliner grapes are also much appreciated for the fact that they hold some unique flavors which come about because they express their terroir very well, and are often most commonly associated with flavors of citrus fruits, peaches and peppery, tobacco notes.

Country: Austria

For over four thousand years, Austria has been home to some of Europe's finest wines, with a strong domestic wine industry which is beginning to be once again recognized for its world class quality. All over the eastern part of the country, and even in the capital, Vienna, small wineries are working with the grape varietals which flourish in the country's hot summer climate and mineral rich soils, fed by the Danube and other great rivers which cross the flat lands of this part of Austria. Most commonly, wineries work with the Grüner Veltliner grapes which grow so well here, and produce the dry and elegant white wines which typify Austria's viticultural produce. However, many other fine grape varietals are grown and used for a wide range of wine styles, including some extremely interesting sweet white wines similar to those found in neighboring Hungary.
