Here's a new discovery from the Mazon subregion that is closely associated with the cultivation of Pinot Nero. The Castelfeder 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Mazon opens to a medium ruby color with dark garnet concentration. The wine is redolent of cassis and candied cherry, and there is a potent floral component as well, with pressed violet and honeysuckle. The 2018 Pinot Nero from the Mazon cru mixes ripe strawberry and cherry with hints of rubbed sage, wood spice, and wet stone, forming a dark and earthy display. It’s pleasantly ripe, showing a blending of red/blue fruits, strewn with minerals, a twang of citrus and sneaky tannins that slowly saturate. While showing its youthful structure front and center, there’s still plenty of ripe fruit, licorice and notes of violet florals that linger on and on, leaving a fully balanced and satisfying impression.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

Trentino-Alto Adige in northern Italy is a beautiful and fascinating wine region, with centuries of viticultural history creating a unique identity and set of flavours and aromas associated with it. Due to its closeness to the Italian borders, there are plenty of international influences found in the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige, most notably coming from the nearby Germanic countries on the other side of the Alps. The Alps play a huge role in the wine culture of the region, as the foothills provide exquisite mountain waters, as well as plenty of interesting soil types on which to grow the vines, resulting in wines full of mountain flavors, alpine aromas and a truly unique character. Wineries in the region love to use the few native grape varietals for their wines, as these are excellent for expressing the unique terroir of Trentino-Alto Adige, however, it is now more common to find better known international varietals listed on bottles, which have helped the world wake up to the wonderful wines of this special region.
