Kurayoshi Distillery lies between Osaka and Hiroshima in the foothills of Mount Daisen, where it produces single malt whiskies brought to proof with soft, mountain spring water. The label, adorned by Hokusai’s The Great Wave, portends this whisky’s rush of flavor: satisfyingly smoky, with noticeable structure and complexity. Kippers on the nose, with burnt aromatic grasses, cocoa, and jellied fruits, and a smoky palate of red apple, ginger, pepper, orange, and mango. Smoke writhes like a serpent on the finish, sliding off the walls dripping with sweet tropical fruits. #19 Top 20, 2019. - Winter 2019 ... More details

Sweet grain aromas mix with an undertone of peat smoke for a lovely and refreshing nose. The flavor begins floral, with white flowers and bartlett pear notes that gently twist and turn into robust peat smoke. The balance between delicate and robust is an impressive feat. - 2022 ULTIMATE SPIRITS CHALLENGE

Katsushika Hokusai’s “The great wave” Packing a potent peat punch, this bottling leaves a hale and hearty aftertaste, even among Matsui whiskies. We feel the force and majesty of the waves in this Ukiyo-e artwork reflects the spirit of our peated offering, hence why we chose it for our label. Aesthetically pleasing and delicious, this Matsui whisky is a work of pride.

Country: Japan

For those looking for something a little different from their wines, then Japan is an ideal location to look to. The two key national drinks of the country – sake rice wine, and plum wine – are equally delicious, unique and aromatic, and are becoming more and more popular in the west as our fascination with this far east country continues to grow. Plum wines are made in a similar way to grape based wines, but the result is quintessentially Japanese, as they are aromatic, sweet and flavorful, whilst being light and utterly drinkable. Sake, too, is light and dry, an excellent accompaniment to Japanese cuisine, and contains as much variety and interesting features as any other type of wine. Both the plums and the rice required to make such drinks grow in a wide range of regions of Japan, and as such, each region has their own style, making them an interesting set of drinks to explore.
