Wine Advocate
The 2021 Saint George was aged for six months in neutral French oak and comes in with 13.56% alcohol. The importer says this is the "new approach on St. George. Selected vineyards from five villages in the Nemea zone (average altitude 1,640 feet) that give clarity and intensity of fruit. Maturation is in neutral French barriques for six months." That scared me a little since I really liked the 2020, but the neutral French oak hints that this might be going even further in the direction I liked there, that middle ground that produces a clean but substantial Agiorgitiko. This remains ripe and rather deep for the basic Agiorgitiko. In bottle less than 90 days when seen, this was still showing very well. It is focused and precise with a firmer finish than normal. It seems serious but pure. As it sits and opens up, it becomes intensely flavorful, flaunting its cherry- and strawberry-laced fruit. I'm not sure this completely gets to distinguished, but I'd say it looks like a big success for the new direction. If it can improve over a few years, then I'd be even more impressed. For the moment, it is both elegant and delicious.
Wine Spectator
A fragrant red, with a pronounced note of black plum reduction accented by hints of flowers, herbs and minerally stone and smoke. Medium-bodied and balanced, with a bright finish. Drink now. 5,850 cases made, 3,300 cases imported.
Winery
This wine hails from the Nemea appellation within the Peloponnese region. One-hundred percent Aghiorghitiko from 20+ year old vines; it is planted in clay soils at 650-meters above sea level. Fermented and macerated in stainless steel vats, it undergoes maloactic fermentation and is then aged in French barriques for 12-months and another six in bottle. It exhibits fine grained tannins, intense raspberry fruit and sweet spices.
