The 2021 Block 6 Chardonnay is tropical and exotic on the nose, and this paves the way for a slippery-feeling, wide and powerful palate. There’s plenty of yellow peach and star anise through the finish, with a core of stewed apple and apricot Danish. It’s definitely the Chardonnay with the loudest voice and the most intense flavors; the acidity here sits nicely within the space and feels quite balanced. In 2022, I preferred Block 1 over this, and this year, I prefer this wine. Seasonal variation makes for engaging and exciting drinking. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The 2021 Chardonnay Block 6 is like a jittery foal; it's focused and precise with that skittish, nervy acidity. This is one that's going to need time to move into its adulthood. There are silken, creamy curves that it can grow into. Delectable almond and oatmeal-like flavors linger on the lengthy finish.

Varietal: Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one which has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is the Chardonnay. This green skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape, and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Region: Central Otago

Central Otago, in southern New Zealand, is probably one of the most visually beautiful wine regions on earth, with its gorgeously mountainous landscape, glacial valley sides and stunning views over some of the most dramatic land formations found anywhere. It is widely renowned in the wine world as being the planet's most southerly wine region, situated at a latitude of forty five degrees south of the equator. This extreme position provides a fascinating micro climate in the region, which western settlers discovered almost a hundred and fifty years ago was ideal for viticulture. Today, the wine industry of Central Otago is booming, and the Pinot Noir grapes which thrive most successfully there are renowned for producing big, flavorful and characterful red wines which have gone on to become a flagship for Central Otago's wineries.

Country: New Zealand

As with nearby Australia, New Zealand has over the past century proven itself to be a superb location for producing high quality wines in vast amounts, with much of the cooler regions of both islands being used primarily for vine cultivation. New Zealand wineries are notable for their enthusiasm in regards to experimentation, and for utilizing modern technologies and methods to make the most of the imported grape varietals which flourish in the rich, fertile soils and oceanic climate. In recent years, it has been the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines which have gained the most attention, as a result of their smoky character and ability to carry the mineral rich nature of the terroir they grow in. Changing consumer interests have brought about a considerable rise in the production of organic and sustainable wines in New Zealand, of which again, the Sauvignon Blanc varietals are leading the way in regards to excellence, flavor and overall character.
