Always experimenting, Erica and Kim Crawford (yes, that Kim Crawford, although he sold the famous winery with his namesake years ago) have used green-tea tannin extract in place of sulfur as an antimicrobial and preservative. It completely changes this famous wine style. Medium gold in color, it smells like honeycomb, pineapple turnover cake, lemon verbena, wild herbs and, yes, green tea. The palate is fresher than the nose and color imply. It’s dry with a gentle texture and lovely juiciness. Zesty fruit, ginger and a slight bite of tannin at the finish make for a characterful and highly food-friendly wine, more in the vein of a Chardonnay than a traditional Marlborough Sauvignon. The Loveblock 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Tee is richly textured, with sweet apple and caramelized pineapple flavors and herbs. While green tea tannins were used to protect the wine from oxidation rather than SO2, it has a touch of oxidative character about it. It is soft, round and gentle white but it has fine phenolics and a light tannic character with well balanced acidity.

Distinctive and aromatic, with floral details and touches of orange water, dried pineapple, peach cobbler, honeycomb and toasted herbs. Reveals serious freshness and verve from the crisp acidity on a supple frame, with lingering accents of candied ginger and nutty rooibos tea. Drink now. 2,000 cases imported.

Colour: Pale straw with a hint of green and gold. Aroma: This wine has lifted aromas of mandarin zest, quince, yellow peach, sweet basil, gooseberry, white pepper and distinct wet stone minerality, with structured herbal notes. Palate: The palate is elegant, with juicy mandarin, earthy cumin, sweet basil and ripe yellow star fruit (carambola). Layered and textured, the wine is clean and fresh with flavours of ripe pineapple and a mild tannin note sitting over a layer of umami.

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc

The green skinned grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc varietal had their origins in Southern France, where they are still widely grown and used for many of the excellent young and aged white wines the region is famous for. Today, however, they are grown in almost every wine producing country in the world, and are widely revered for their fresh and grassy flavors, full of tropical notes and refreshing, zesty character. Sauvignon Blanc grapes thrive best in moderate climates, and ripen relatively early in the year. This has made them a favorite for many wineries in the New World, where they can still produce healthy and high yields in the earlier part of the summer before the temperatures become too hot. Too much heat has a massively adverse effect on Sauvignon Blanc, as the grapes become dull in their flavor, and the wine produced from them loses all its unique character and high points. As such, Sauvignon Blanc farmers have had a lot of trouble from global warming and climate change, as they are being forced to harvest their crops increasingly earlier in the year when it is cool enough to do so.

When it comes to New Zealand wines, the Marlborough region is the most highly regarded and by far the largest in the country. The region itself has been closely associated with high quality white wines for over forty years now, and consistently produces some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc wines in the world. However, in recent years it has begun to expand its repertoire, and wineries have been busily raising Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in Marlborough, amongst certain others. The excellent soil and ideal climate the region benefits from ensures the fruit there ripens slowly, achieving maximum flavor and expression of terroir. Furthermore, Marlborough's situation on the north easternmost tip of New Zealand's South Island ensures there are plenty of cooling oceanic breezes crossing the vineyards, making this one of the most perfect locations in the world for quality viticulture.

These Pinot Noir wines are far more fleshy than their Burgundy counterparts, and are probably best enjoyed when young, and bursting with the fruit flavors they carry so well.
