The characterful rosé 2021 Escabeces was produced with Xarel.lo Vermell grapes, a gris/rosé version of Xarello that is enjoying a revival. They have used different percentages of skins over the years, and in the cooler 2021, the wine continues the austere line of lack of fruit and minerality, serious, a little reductive and with a tasty finish that calls for food. This is more complete than previous vintages; the improvement in viticulture shows, and the wine is very harmonious, balanced and fresh, despite having more ripeness and a tad more alcohol, which also means more complete ripeness of the grapes, more aromas and flavors and a better wine overall. Superb! 7,000 bottles.

Region: Cataluna

Spain's stunning coastal region of Catalunya has long since impressed the world with its wide range of excellent wines, the result of a wine history which stretches back to pre-Roman time, and it has been a key stopping point on some of the most ancient wine trade routes on earth. It isn't difficult to understand why Catalunya has had so much influence over the ages – the rich and fertile soils, the heat tempered by Mediterranean breezes, the fine grape varietals which flourish there have all helped establish Catalunya as an important global wine producer. Today, Catalunya is perhaps most famous for its 'methode champenoise' sparkling Cava wines, however, the region's soils support a wide range of grape varietals, and as such, the two hundred or so bodegas in the region produce a large variety of superb wines and wine styles.

Country: Spain

Spanish wines are renowned world-wide for carrying all the passion and character of the Spanish culture within them. Any lover of Spanish wine would undoubtedly be able to confirm this notion, as the variety and range of flavors and aromas coming from the high end of Spanish produce is truly impressive, and continues to delight and fascinate both newcomers and the more experienced. Spain benefits massively from an ideal climate for wine production and vine cultivation, with its long, scorching hot summers and far reaching oceanic breezes working perfectly with the native and imported grape varietals, which thrive on the mineral rich soils that cover much of the country. With centuries of knowledge, and generations of expertise under their belts, Spanish wineries continue to focus on raising the quality of their nation's wines, helped along the way by relatively new laws and regulations regarding regional excellence and representativeness.
