The 2020 Steinkrügle is another fascinating Chasselas from Hanspeter and Edeltraud Ziereisen that comes from 40+-year-old vines and was aged on the lees for about 20 months in traditional oak casks. The wine exhibits an intense golden-yellow color and a deep, pure, concentrated and intensely mineral bouquet with ripe, elegant fruit aromas intermingled with iodine notes of crushed stones and refreshing phenolic nuances. Dense, lush and elegant on the tropical-flavored palate, this is a fine and erotic Chasselas with a long, complex and stimulating saline finish. The acidity is fine and fresh and perfectly integrated with the phenolic structure and elegant texture of this youthful and age-worthy white from Germany's southern tip. It was bottled with 11% stated alcohol but with a density, intensity and complexity you can hardly measure. After the superb 2017, this is another over-performing Steinkrügle. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in November 2022. ... More details

Wolf in sheep's clothing. Minority on the nose with hints of citrus and pear. The minerality continues on the palate. Flint, salt, with slightly herbaceous notes and yellow fruits. Noticeable phenolic, fine enamel paired with filigree and finesse. Great drinking flow through the animating, mature acidity and a long reverberation. A gutedel with a Burgundian character who is elegantly reserved. Aging potential of at least ten years.

Country: Germany

Despite being known primarily for sweet and semi-sweet white wines, Germany actually produces a surprisingly large and varied range of wines, with many reaching an extremely high standard and being very well received on the world stage. The terrain across much of the southern parts of the country is extremely fertile, with mineral rich soils adding a wonderful edge to already excellent grapes, and thus resulting in delicious and highly elegant white and rosé wines. The climate in many parts of Germany also allows for some more unusual wine-making practices, with certain regions specializing in the highly aromatic and distinctive 'ice-wines' which are gaining popularity by those looking for something a little more intense and unusual. With these wines, the producers allow the grapes to freeze through the early frosts, resulting in a higher sugar content and a fantastic set of flavors and aromas in the finished product. Germany has long since favored quality over quantity, and a new enthusiasm for fine wine within the country is producing truly exciting results, using a blending of traditional and contemporary techniques.
