The superb quality of fruit allocated in this luscious blend – dubbed by many as 'baby Grange' – represents probably the best value to be found in the Penfolds portfolio, and is the shining star of the reds in the 2022 Collection. Its rich and plush mixture of plum, black cherry and mulberry flavours are slapped into line by a stern tannin drill sergeant, so that it finishes cleanly and absolutely correctly. Looking in on the 389 can be "'can be," she says, parenthetically) a good insight into what we can expect from the upcoming Grange. Now, they are very different wines, no question, however, stylistically they have much in common and the illumination into the season that birthed the wines in each instance. Here, the 2020 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has consummate polish and sleek tannins, imbued as they are with graphite, black tea, licorice and resin. The fruit is pure and black and chewy... gorgeous wine. And it lives for decades. This has always been a collector's dream and continues so through this vintage. Highly recommended.

Very rich, ripe and intense, this has plenty of depth and is one of the strongest statements of Penfolds’ house style. Rich vanillin and sweetly spicy American oak on the nose, with chocolate, blueberry, violet, blackberry and iodine notes. The palate delivers quite approachable and supple texture, smoothly fleshy and inviting. Flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant and mulberry abound. Deep and ripe finish with nutty tannins to close. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthaway. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Saturated garnet. Pungent, spice- and smoke-accented scents of black and blue fruits, licorice, violet, coconut and smoky minerals. Juicy and impressively concentrated, offering intense blackberry, cherry-vanilla and bitter chocolate flavors that become sweeter and more lively with air. Finishes smooth and impressively long, with repeating blue fruit and spice character and harmonious tannins that add shape and gentle grip. All American oak, one-third of it new.

Dense and succulent, with velvety tannins and a core of spiced plum and blackberry. The details and aromatics take this wine to the next level—reminiscent of dark chocolate and Black Forest cake, Kalamata olive, nutmeg and palo santo. Gains momentum on the long, expressive finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Drink now through 2037. 14,605 cases imported.

Balance of the sweet (cabernet) and the savory (shiraz). Possesses what has now often been referred to as a black forest cake 2020 vintage flavor profile. Darker fruits – closer to that of a black cherry liqueur than a crème de cassis. The structure of Cabernet Sauvignon aligned with the richness of Shiraz. Blackberries, savory herbs, licorice, cassis this wine’s youthful profile is tempered by softened and even tannins – from start to finish. And the judicious use of new oak.

The enormous wine region of South Australia covers a huge area, and is bordered by all other mainland Australian states. The region itself is split into six key sub-regions, Barossa Zone, Far North Zone, The Fleurieu Zone, Mount Lofty Ranges Zone and the Limestone Coast Zone. All have a range of climatic conditions within them, and as such, produce a wide variety of wine types and styles using a range of different grape varietals. South Australia holds the country's oldest wineries, with a viticultural history which dates back to the mid 19th century, when the country was first being properly established. Early settlers noticed that, with the help of some irrigation, the higher altitude areas of the region and the valley sides were ideal for vineyard cultivation. Today, the region produces an enormous amount of wine, including Australia's famous Shiraz and Chardonnay examples, which are enjoyed all over the world.
